Artist Research

I was quite influenced by Ridley Scott's 1982 film "Blade Runner" and 2015 film "The Martian", both aesthetically pleasing to look at and the tone and atmospheric mood of the films gave me a tense yet lonely kind of feeling. The setting of these worlds allowed the characters in these films to be more human, making these characters on screen feel alive rather than they are playing a role. The environment design itself (though there is a stark contrast between both of the films) gives a very surrreal feeling. When watching both of these films, it gave me a 'way beyond my comprehension' type of feeling, but yet it manages to suck me in watching it because of the way the environment influences the characters on screen, and the way they function in that world.

Though Ridley Scott excels at creating these surrealistic worlds with characters that are very human, it always tends to feel distant and cold due to the fact that the main vision of these films were never suppose to feel personal, but rather, he focuses on the movie's image as a whole, how it flows, how everything will turn out as one entity. This may be a not so point to focus on when analysing his works, however, I do feel that having some sense of coldness and distance are also good when it comes to creating stories that are in this huge world, with very little understanding of it. This is due to the fact that there could be potential in creating deeper bonds with characters on the screen as an audience the more you try to analyse and think about them when you think about the coldness these films present.

Overall, I have been quite inspired by the surrealistic world's presented by Ridley Scott, along side with the characters that happen to live in such an isolating and cold world. Therefore, I had made attempts at creating an ambitious type of animatic as a result of the influence. If given more time or longer length for the animatic, perhaps, I believe, I could create a more meaningful story within this setting I have created - dystopian vs utopian.
