Reflection

Unlike the previous project (creating an animatic), this round, I had no idea what kind of theme or story I would like to tell. That, to me, was very shocking, as I usually would have a million ideas, and find it impossible to choose from a sea of ideas. Maybe I was having an artist block? Or maybe I was just mentally drained. Therefore, I had to find another approach to get pass this creative juice block. I decided to follow the tutor's advice this round and use scrap papers and magazines to create my characters out of collages. This eventually led me to create some characters that are fire related. It was very fun to do character designs in an unexpecting way. It gave me less control over how the characters turned out, and therefore gave me more options that I probably would not have imagined if I hand drawn it instead, as the results for collage made characters can be very varied.

After noticing the tendency I had to create characters reated to fire, I wanted to exapand on the idea of fire. The themes I ended up with were desire, emptiness and addiction. The themes ended up being serious. I thought about what fire could possibly represent, and in many different contexts, fire could be seen differently, For example: fire is used as a form of blessing within Christianity while it could also be portrayed as hell within Christianity and Islam. On the other hand, fire can be seen as a methaphor for desire and passsion. Therefore, mixing all of these ideas together, created this story about a character trying to fill up its empty heart with a sex fufilling life in hopes of getting happiness and satisfaction out of it.

Although I had no specific audience in mind while doing this, as I felt like I was doing this project for myself. However, I do think that it is targeted towards people who are in a dire situation.

Positives:

As I have control over my own storyline and animation, it was overall fun without outside input or disruptions. I could control the flow of it, check the quality of it and most importantly, since it is my own idea, I do not need to discuss it with ideas with others, and make it personal instead.

Negatives:

Physically drawing every single frame, and going back and forth with each frame was very tiring. Not only would it be so much easier doing it digitally, but it would save a lot of trees really. My main issue with the project was definitely the usage of paper. Ridiculous amounts of it. It made me feel very guilty wasting so much for the sake of a very short animation. Maybe instead next time if I were to do something similar again, perhaps, I could use recycled paper or used paper instead so that we are helping the environment instead of killing it more. Next time, if I were to do something similar again, I would like to be more sustainable with my work.
