Reflection: Product and Spatial Design + artist influence

For these past few days, my reflections had been heavily focused on how I managed my time and how I work inefficiently, but today was different. I had not only managed to finish my tasks on time, but I had done it in an efficient manner.

However, today’s first task was supposed to be done in your groups, and as I had expected, I found it difficult. When we were discussing what we wanted to make using the bamboo sticks we were given, we were not able to compromise with each other what we wanted to do and we just went with the flow instead, inputting random ideas on the way, hence the incomplete look of our “improved ger”. I think what we lacked was chemistry and communication with each other. If I do not get to know the person beforehand, it will be a lot harder to collaborate when making a work. I believe this applies to not just me, but everyone else too.

This was not a problem for me for our second task. Since I could work on it alone, I could do it in a way I liked. Through my research about Ulaanbaatar and their air pollution, I realised that if everybody puts in small amounts of effort in a day together, the pollution in their city could be lowered. By integrating their culture and a small simple piece of technology together, I had created a Mongolian inspired necklace with an air filter in it. If majority of the people the city were given a chance to integrate it into their everyday wear, it would enhance the city’s air quality by a huge margin, however, it would not work with small groups of people wearing it.

As I was making it, I realised I do not have most of the materials to complete this task, such as gems for the necklace. Instead, I decided to make a base in class, photographed it and drew it digitally unto the necklace to show my visions for it. I was inspired by the virtual fashion shown on the climate change film done by LCC when I was completing one of the primer tasks for Design rotation. Designer Damara Ingles was showcasing the use of technology and how we can be sustainable by using technology to incorporate into our fashion dictated lives. Through virtual reality, we could make fashion more fashionable and more imaginary without having to waste loads of materials to achieve it. This was motivation for completing the design of my necklace on the ipad instead.
