What made me really think? Why?

During 1^st TED talk I have watched “Tim Brown: Tales of Creativity and Play”, when Tim mentions that “But as they learn to become adults, they become much more sensitive to the opinions of others, and they lose that freedom and they do start to become embarrassed”, this made me think throughout the whole weekend- “Oh really now? (sarcastically)” And then I realise, yep, he ain’t wrong.

The reason it made me ‘really’ think was because of one very simple reason- the way I had decided to talk and approach others in these past few years was all thanks to me becoming more sensitive to others around me. Their speech patterns, their body language, their opinions and viewpoints.

When growing up, the culture around me emphasises focusing on others around you and how your actions affect them, and I have subconsciously adapted a new kind of behaviour- camouflaging behaviour. That means trying not to stick out and try to be seen as ‘normal’. If I ever had been pointed out in a strange or ostracising manner, I would just be extremely embarrassed even if I do not show it. I think rather than this made me ‘really’ think, it just made me more aware how much I have lost my sense of curiosity and freedom without worrying about everything around me.

Which one comment will I still remember next year? Why?

“Over time as I threw up my hands and walked away and said take the perspective chart, they began to adopt it” This is probably one of the comments I will remember for quite a while. Not because it just sounds miraculously ridiculous, but it really shows and makes us think ‘just why did this company rejected it in the first place when they were going to end up to using her idea anyway?’

This makes me curious as to why an enormous company like windows responded the way they did, and what has led them to act this way. It was this comment that triggered my curiosity as to the human behaviour behind these actions.

Which of one these talks would I tell a friend to watch? Why?

I would recommend the “Tim Brown: Tales of Creativity and Play” despite it being quite a long TED talk. It was not boring from beginning till the end, and I ended up learning something valuable about myself from this talk- I have dulled down as a person since my younger days. Now that I am made aware about it, it makes me want to change the way I’ve approached a lot of things in my life from now onwards, and I hope to do the same for my friends who are either struggling or have lost themselves elsewhere without realising it.

How could these talks influence my own approach to my work?

These talks all thought me one thing- experiment, experiment, EXPERIMENT! Having this in mind, it would definitely influence the way I approach my work. Instead of doing the usual ‘let’s plan the artwork carefully, the meaning behind it and my intentions for it’, it would be something like this ‘Splish, splash, paint!’ or whatever the equivalent of simply doing stuff while being absent minded is. Either way, it will be intriguing as to the way experimentation might open ways and possibilities to enhance the way I do story telling in the future.
